The Trip

Key West to Bloomington on a bicycle? Impossible? Well ... it's up to you to decide! This can be an amazing achievement for any student-aged cyclist. You can do it ... it's been done before and it is FUN!

The route begins in Key West, Florida, the southern-most city of the United States. You will spend your first full day exploring this tropical resort town way out at sea. Then on Day 1, you will travel the Seven Mile Bridge with the Gulf of Mexico on your left and the Atlantic Ocean on your right. Nowhere in the world can you pedal a bicycle in the middle of an ocean. They even have dolphin crossings! The entire first half of the trip will tightly follow the Atlantic coastline and super flat terrain going through Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Cape Canaveral. The deCycles will visit the Kennedy Space Center and spend a day at Disney World. The cyclists will then head up to Daytona Beach, St. Augustine (the oldest city in America), Jacksonville, Savannah, and enjoy an anticipated overnight stay on the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in Charleston. At this point, the deCycles will pull away from the coast and head for the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg, and Sevierville, TN. This area can be even more fun than Disney World.  Finally, the deCycles will pedal up through the gorgeous horse farms in Lexington, Frankfort, the KY capitol, and Louisville and on home to the final destination of Bloomington, IN. There is much much more.  This trip is loaded with exciting scenery, great biking roads, and lots of off-bike fun.

Why was this route chosen? The deCycles did a similar route in 2003. The student-riders loved it and is still one of our most favorite trips. We had ocean swimming at practically all the rest stops along the coastline. Also, for veterans of the 2012 trip who have pedaled from San Francisco to Bloomington, this route will complete their transcontinental coast to coast achievement.  And for those veterans on both the 2012 and 2013 trips, this 2014 trip will complete a coast-to-coast and south-north border to border crisscross cycling achievement. WOW!  How many teenagers can say they've criss-crossed the entire nation on a bicycle? And for rookies, you can't get on a better deCycles trip than this one.

Finally, there is free airfare to Florida! But in order to qualify, you have to be between the ages of 13-22 and currently a full time student in MS, HS, or college. In order to secure your spot and free airfare, you need to download the application form (see below).
