The Trip

You are invited to join 60 other students on a 3-week bicycle ride along the entire Pacific Coast of the United States. Impossible? Well ... it's up to YOU to decide! This can be an amazing achievement for any student-aged adventurer. You can do it ... it's been done before and it is FUN!

The trip begins in Seattle, Washington and follows one of the most scenic coastal highways in the world ... all the way to Los Angeles, California.  The trip will cover 1500 spectacular miles with mountains to the left, ocean to the right, and prevailing tailwinds pushing you most of the way.  During the first week, the deCycles will visit Puget Sound and Olympic National Park.  The riders will pedal along the coastline of Washington and Oregon and enjoy an optional dune buggy tour at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.  A side trip to Crater Lake National Park and Mt. Shasta is being considered. The first weekend will be in the Crescent City-Eureka area surrounded by the redwood forests of northern California.

Week #2 begins a spectacular trek through Redwoods National Park and Humboldt State Park.  Many Star Wars movie scenes were filmed here and you may see Ewoks scampering across the road.  Pedaling through the "Avenue Of The Giants" will leave a lasting impression on everyone.  The route will then divert inland to beautiful Napa & Sonoma Valley, home of world famous vineyards and wineries.  The deCycles will then return to the coast to pedal across the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy a long 4th of July weekend in the San Francisco & Santa Cruz area and it's many attractions.

Week #3 will be the most amazing week of enjoyment and sense of wonder.  Pedaling through San Francisco, Monterray Bay, Carmel-by-the-Sea, 17-Mile Road, Pebble Beach, Big Sur coastline and onward south for a visit to Hearst Castle, huge strawberry fields, and shorelines lined with seals and surfers will be absolutely unforgettable.  The picturesque city of Santa Barbara will be a fantastic overnight with the final push along the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu Beach, Santa Monica, Hollywood, and Los Angeles.

Travel details to and from the west coast are listed on the application form.  The deCycles has booked group flights with a $260 DISCOUNTED AIRFARE PROMOTION for early signups. This is not a Southwest Airline promotion.  It is a deCycles scholarship offered from various financial donors including Bloomington Bicycle Club, Bloomington Firefighters Union, Bloomington Chiropractic Center, St. John Associates, Henry Family, Richard Houze Family, Kase Family, and deCycles veterans including Dan Melamed, Mike Ives, Doug Snow, and Norm & Cricket Houze.   Three-day ground transportation will also be available.  Every attempt has been made through this scholarship to offer a more affordable adventure for you.  The airfare promotion expires on March 1, 2016.  The outbound flight is on June 16 and inbound flight is July 11.

This trip is loaded with exciting world-class scenery, great biking roads, and loads of off-bike fun. Beginner and adult cyclists are welcome.  Register early because the roster fills quickly.  This is the best deal you'll ever find on any 3-week summer adventure in a far-away land.
