deCycles American Rivers 2018

You are invited to join 40 other students on a 3-week bicycle trip from Bloomington to the Atlantic coast. Impossible?  Well ... it's up to YOU to decide!  This can be an amazing achievement for any student-aged adventurer. You can do it ... it's been done before and it is FUN!

The trip begins in Bloomington, where we left off from the deCycles 2017 trip. For veterans of last year's trip, this route will complete your transcontinental coast-to-coast achievement. Put that on your college, scholarship, or job application and you will definitely get noticed. The riders will follow the Ohio River trail starting in Madison, Indiana all the way to Huntington, WV.  Next will be the Kanahwa River to visit the state capitol building in Charleston, WV.  You will stay overnight at the confluence of the Gauley River and New River and enjoy one of the most exciting half-day raft trips in the entire country.  The deCycles have rafted the New River twice and it is forever memorable. The riders will then pedal eastward into the Appalacian Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway with a weekend rest day in Charlottesville, Virginia.  There we will visit Thomas Jefferson's famed Monticello.  Absolutely gorgeous.

The second week will have the deCycles pedal along the Rappahannock and Rivanna Rivers to Fredricksburg and the George Washington Memorial Bike Trail into Washington DC for the 4th of July holiday.  We will tour the city by bike including Arlington National Cemetary, the Lincoln Memorial, The White House, Capitol Hill, and spend time following the most historic river in America, the Potomac River.   On the rest day in DC, the deCycles will attend one of the most spectacular fireworks displays in the nation, next to the Washington Monument. Wow!

After a rest day of sightseeing in the nation's capitol, the deCycles will continue to the Atlantic Coast and northeast along the Delaware River to Staten Island.  There the riders will board the free ferry to downtown Manhattan for a bike tour of the largest city in America.  Times Square, Wall Street, 9/11 Memorial grounds, Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Rockefeller Center will all be part of the tour. The next day will be a rest day full of sightseeing and fun. The deCycles have visited Washington DC and NYC twice in the past two decades. Cycling can be the best way to visit and see these cities.

During the final week, the route follows the famed Hudson River all the way close to the Canadian border along the shores of Lake Champlain in upstate NY.  Riding a bicycle in the Hudson River Valley is breathtaking and the deCycles will be following it for 300-miles.  On Friday, July 13 in Plattsburgh, everything will get packed up and ready for the roadtrip to Niagara Falls and then to Bloomington, Sunday afternoon, July 15, for a homecoming banquet and celebration.

The riders will be rewarded with exciting world-class scenery, great biking roads, and loads of off-bike fun.  Beginner and adult cyclists are welcome.  Register early because the roster fills quickly.  This is the best deal you'll ever find on any 3-week summer adventure in a far-away land. You can send the completed registration form and trip fee by mail, or hand deliver to Norm & Cricket's Bloomington residence at 4165 Judee Drive or clinic at 2501 E. Third Street.  Hope you can join us.
